Avondale is a Census Designated Place (CDP) located in Louisiana’s Jefferson Parish. Its population is quite small, with just over 5,000 residents as of 2010. Although it has enjoyed a relatively stable economy throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, recent developments have promised to upset the status quo for this CDP.
Avondale is on the West Bank of New Orleans, near Gretna and Westwego. Unlike these other communities, Avondale is less focused on residential development and situating itself as a retreat for individuals who work, but do not live, in New Orleans. Its primary industries are construction and retail sales, which have dominated the local economy for decades. The professional sector is largely absent, but other industries (such as manufacturing and wholesale trade) play in important part in bolstering Avondale’s capital and providing employment opportunities for the populace.
One of the most visible, and influential, employers in the Avondale area is the Avondale Shipyard. This manufacturing and construction center is the backbone of the local economy, and much of its workforce are residents of the area. Unfortunately, it was announced in the summer of 2010 that the shipyard will close by 2013. Several overtures have been made by external companies to purchase the shipyard, politicians have denounced the decision and there has been a general public outcry throughout the New Orleans metropolitan area, but the trajectory remains the same.
The prospect of the Avondale Shipyard shutting its doors clearly promises major repercussions for the CDP of Avondale itself. Although there are some other employment opportunities in the area, the immediate effect of closure would be a spike in the unemployment rate, which may prompt something of an exodus from the CDP. It would certainly remove much of the workforce from Avondale, and force residents to go elsewhere as commuters. Hopefully, the Avondale Shipyard will be purchased and revived before the 2013 deadline, but if that does not occur, closure of this construction center could potentially cripple Avondale’s economy.
